Board Leadership Associate (Volunteer)

Position Overview
The Board Leadership Associate is an unpaid volunteer leadership development opportunity designed for a college marketing student, recent graduate, or early-career marketer interested in gaining firsthand experience with nonprofit leadership and Board governance.
Working closely with AMA Houston’s Executive Director, President, and President-Elect, the Board Leadership Associate will get a behind-the-scenes look at how a professional nonprofit Board of Directors operates—from strategic planning and financial stewardship to programming, membership, governance, events, and community engagement.
This is a hands-on role that combines meaningful support of AMA Houston’s leadership team with mentorship, professional development, and exposure to experienced marketing and business leaders throughout Houston.
Key Responsibilities
Work closely with the Executive Director, President, and President-Elect to support Board and Executive Committee activities.
Coordinate logistics for monthly Board meetings, including ordering and organizing lunch while adhering to approved budget guidelines.
Assist with planning and logistics for Board gatherings, retreats, appreciation activities, and other leadership events.
Help the President prepare and organize agendas, presentations, reports, and other materials for Executive Committee and Board meetings.
Support monthly AMA Houston luncheons by assisting with podium and speaker materials, testing presentations, and helping ensure speakers are prepared before the program begins.
Help maintain Board calendars, meeting schedules, leadership resources, and organizational materials.
Assist with meeting setup and other logistical needs for Board and leadership activities.
Provide light administrative and project support for special Board initiatives as needed.
Attend Board meetings and select Executive Committee meetings when appropriate, gaining firsthand exposure to nonprofit governance, financial discussions, strategic planning, and organizational decision-making.
Serve as an additional resource during major chapter programs, events, and leadership activities as availability permits.
Help identify opportunities to improve Board organization, communication, and meeting efficiency.
Maintain professionalism and confidentiality when exposed to Board, financial, personnel, or other sensitive organizational information.
Ideal Candidate
This opportunity is ideal for someone who:
Is a college marketing/business student, recent graduate, or early-career marketing professional.
Is interested in marketing, nonprofit leadership, business, community involvement, or future Board service.
Is organized, dependable, proactive, and willing to jump in where needed.
Has strong written and verbal communication skills.
Is comfortable interacting professionally with senior marketing and business leaders.
Can manage small projects and deadlines with limited supervision.
Is curious and interested in learning how a nonprofit organization and Board of Directors actually operate.
Can commit approximately 8–10 hours per month, with some months requiring slightly more or less depending on the chapter calendar.
Membership & Eligibility Requirements
Candidates must be a current member of an AMA collegiate chapter or a member of AMA Houston and maintain their membership throughout the appointment.
This is an unpaid volunteer position and does not create an employment relationship with AMA Houston.

Time Commitment & Term
Time Commitment: Approximately 8–10 hours per month, including monthly Board meetings and occasional lunchtime or evening meetings, programs, and events.
Term: One fiscal year (July–June), with the opportunity to continue based on mutual interest.
